Space Traveler Shares Depression After Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
