Just 60 days ago when the Villa attacker stood on the Stadium of Light pitch, looking confused as Unai Emery berated him over failing to anticipate a pass in behind. At that point, with the team failed to win in six, it wasn't clear whether Rogers' form were an indicator or a cause of the team's wider issues.

This weekend, however, the sideline response was entirely decidedly more positive. As Rogers curled home his second to restore Villa's lead, the boss ripped off his winter coat, spread his arms and roared. The Birmingham club marched on to a tenth straight victory and having failed to win their initial half-dozen games, find themselves just three points off pace-setters Arsenal.

Are They Genuine Challengers?

This is an exceptionally difficult proposition to resolve. History, the traditional standing of Villa, argues against it. Moreover, they have not been wholly dominant this season, while the wins have stacked up.

As per Opta, twice all season has the team had an expected goals figure notably superior than the opposition. For a team which has put together ten consecutive victories, the Villans look curiously susceptible – yet right now the tight outcomes are falling their way.

The Rogers Recipe

The prevailing tactic seems to be to trade blows with an opponent and wait for Rogers to save the day with two precise efforts. This occurred against Leeds, it occurred in London, and once more when facing United.

Perhaps there is in that the possibility of a title challenge, however, it is improbable cannot keep relying on a single individual.

Savoring the Moment

Yet, this is a surprise. It seemed improbable Villa would be in the top three for the holidays. And without a doubt two months ago, nobody thought Rogers now would be leading a title charge while establishing himself as a crucial England player.

The current run should be enjoyed exactly since it feels so unlikely. As the hero positioned himself before the home supporters when the game ended orchestrating the applause, it was clear to be relishing every moment. Which he fully merits. These spells are uncommon in the sport and should be relished.
