In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
